Carousel Lights: How to Choose RGB LEDs for Merry-Go-Round Rides

The merry-go-round — or carousel — is one of the most visually iconic amusement rides. Its lighting is fundamental to its appeal: the warm sparkle of hundreds of small colored lights cycling through rainbow sequences as the horses rise and fall is one of the most universally recognized images of childhood joy. Transitioning a classic carousel from incandescent to LED lighting, or specifying LED lighting for a new carousel, requires careful attention to detail to preserve that magic while delivering modern energy efficiency and reliability.

The Anatomy of Carousel Lighting

A standard carousel has distinct lighting zones, each requiring different specifications:
1. Horse lighting: Individual LED pixel lights on each carousel horse — typically 20–40 bulbs per horse depending on horse size and decoration density. This is the primary decorative element of the carousel.
2. Rounding board lights: The circular panel at the top of the carousel canopy is traditionally the most heavily lit element — rows of dense pixel lights that create the primary chasing and color effects visible from a distance.
3. Overhead canopy lights: The underside of the canopy, visible to riders, is lit with a combination of strip lights and pixel lights to create an immersive "ceiling of light" effect.
4. Pole lights: Some carousels illuminate the center poles (the cranks and twists poles that move the horses) with LED strip lights wrapped helically.
5. Mirror gallery lights: The center drum of many carousels contains a mirrored surface surrounded by bright, closely-spaced pixel lights. This is where the famous "sparkling mirror" effect originates.
6. Perimeter/platform lights: The outer edge of the carousel platform is outlined with LED strip or neon flex to define the ride boundary.

Recommended LED Specifications for Each Zone

Horse Lighting
  ⦁ Type: E14 RGB auto pixel light (COB flip-chip)
  ⦁ Program: Programs 1-8 in sequence per horse (4–8 programs repeated across each horse)
  ⦁ Density: 75mm center-to-center spacing on the main body; 50mm for mane and decorative details
  ⦁ Voltage: Match existing socket voltage (verify before ordering)
  ⦁ IP rating: IP65 (horses are typically not directly rain-exposed when the ride is stationary)
Rounding Board
  ⦁ Type: E14 RGB auto pixel light, highest output variant (1W, high-lumen)
  ⦁ Program: 16-program chase for maximum visual complexity
  ⦁ Density: 50mm spacing (dense packing for maximum impact — this is the primary visual element)
  ⦁ Voltage: Match ride supply
  ⦁ IP rating: IP67 (rounding boards are exposed to rain when the ride is stationary)
Overhead Canopy
  ⦁ Type: RGB LED strip (COB type for seamless linear effect) + pixel lights at key positions
  ⦁ Color: Warm white strip for ambient base + RGB pixel lights for color accents
  ⦁ IP rating: IP20 (interior, protected from weather)
Mirror Gallery
  ⦁ Type: E14 pixel lights, maximum density (25mm–30mm centers)
  ⦁ Program: Programs 1-4 fast chase — the tight spacing combined with fast programs creates the most intense sparkle effect
  ⦁ Special note: Mirror gallery gets hot during operation — ensure IP rating and operating temperature specification confirm suitability for enclosed, low-airflow environments

Color Planning for Carousels

Classic carousel aesthetic uses warm, rich colors — reds, golds, and electric blues — rather than harsh cool whites or neon greens. When selecting program numbers for your carousel, verify with the manufacturer that programs 1-8 (or whatever range you select) deliver warm, saturated color in these tones rather than harsh pastel or desaturated variants.
For restoration projects on antique carousels, consider supplementing RGB pixel lights with fixed-color warm amber bulbs at some positions to maintain the traditional warm incandescent-like glow that characterizes classic merry-go-rounds.
